About the Role
This role spotlights the craftsperson who creates like a designer and codes like an engineer. You’ll bridge the gap between design intent and production code — building the component systems, interactions, and visual experiences that make Muse feel as premium as the stories our users create.
What You’ll Do
- Build and maintain our design system — tokens, components, and patterns that scale across the platform
- Translate design concepts into pixel-perfect, accessible, responsive implementations
- Prototype interactions and animations that enhance the creative workflow
- Collaborate with product designers to refine UI/UX before and during development
- Champion web performance, accessibility (WCAG 2.1 AA), and cross-browser compatibility
- Create and maintain visual documentation (style guides, component showcases)
- Own the frontend architecture for key user-facing features
- Conduct design reviews and provide technical feedback on design feasibility
What We’re Looking For
- 4+ years of experience in design engineering, frontend development, or a hybrid design/dev role
- Expert-level CSS — you think in systems, not one-off styles. Comfort with custom properties, grid, flexbox, animations
- Strong proficiency in TypeScript and component frameworks (React/Preact, Astro, or similar)
- Deep understanding of design systems — tokens, variants, composition, documentation
- Experience with motion design and CSS/JS animation (Framer Motion, GSAP, or CSS transitions)
- Strong visual sensibility — you can spot misaligned elements, inconsistent spacing, and typography issues
- Accessibility expertise — semantic HTML, ARIA, keyboard navigation, screen reader testing
- Experience with Figma and bridging design-to-code workflows
Nice to Have
- Experience designing for creative tools or media applications
- Background in graphic design, typography, or visual arts
- Contributions to open-source design systems
- Experience with 3D/WebGL for interactive experiences
Why Muse
- Own the visual identity of a platform used by world-class storytellers
- Work at the intersection of design and engineering — no silos
- Build a design system from the ground up with real creative constraints
- Competitive salary, equity, and benefits
- Fully remote with flexible hours
